We bought a house!

Last Wednesday, we signed the papers to officially become homeowners!
Our house is half an hour away from our apartment in Portland, and twelve minutes from the awesome little town my school is in. We had originally planned to move somewhere within Portland, and even saw lots of perfectly lovely houses there within our budget, but we just couldn't get over the lack of outdoor space. We figured we've already done big city and small city, so now it's time to see how rural (and close to a small town) goes! Best of all, the dogs now have 2.4 acres of land to patrol, and no nearby neighbors to fear.

We celebrated closing by going to the house with pizza and a bottle of champagne, and painting samples on the living room wall!

We have a long list of painting and cleaning to do before we're ready to move in. We've been chipping away at it slowly but surely after work and on weekends. So far, we've done lots of cleaning, painted a first coat on the living room and mudroom (it's a doozy with 11-foot ceilings!), and had the carpeting professionally washed.

The living room and mudroom are currently a very bright yellow (this photo does not do it justice!):
I'm painting it a light gray instead. I considered a light blue like the lovely color in our apartment's living room, but ultimately, I'd rather have neutral walls and brightly colored furnishings than the other way around (plus, neutral walls make it easier to change the color scheme).

The guest bedroom and one hallway have carpeting. We will definitely replace it eventually to match the rest of the floors, but in the meantime, I had it professionally deep-cleaned. The before and after:
Can you tell the last owner also had two dogs?! Between the dirt from movers' shoes, old stains, and the SEVEN vacuum canisters of dog hair I pulled up before the deep-cleaners came, the carpeting did not look promising. But it now looks (and smells) brand new! Our dogs will be blocked off from this hallway with permanent baby gates, and the guest bedroom will be a no-pet zone until the carpeting is replaced with more washable flooring.

Next steps are a second coat of paint on the living room and mudroom, deep-cleaning the bathroom, and painting the bedroom. With a foot and a half of snow today, though, we may fall a little behind schedule!

Stay warm,
Tascha
